How Speaking Up At Work Can Be Healing

When you stand up for yourself, and set boundaries, you redeem power over your situation.

It’s often difficult to speak up at work when something makes you feel uneasy.

Toxic work environments thrive on people not feeling able to express dissent when:

  • They feel that immense pressure is put on them;
  • They experience a lack of psychological safety to ask questions or experiment;
  • They feel that there is no room to grow in their role;
  • They operate in an environment where subtle forms of bullying are tolerated.

What holds people back from taking action to change these circumstances is often a fear of retaliation from managers, and a desire to avoid conflict.

These reasons are amplified by a sense of overwhelm and fatigue in the workplace.

Speaking up, and taking risks, takes up your limited energy. It’s exhausting and emotionally taxing.

So why would it be worth speaking up in the end? You need a compelling reason that can beat the fear.

Here’s the interesting thing: when you stand up for yourself, and set boundaries, you redeem power over your situation.

This can be profoundly healing in reclaiming a sense of self-respect and integrity, regardless of external outcomes.

As a coach, I work with clients who end up choosing to stand up for themselves at work. The impact it has on their own self is immense. And almost magically, external circumstances change too, as a result.
